Extraction and the environment: when a jewel also protects life

Extracción y medio ambiente: cuando una joya también cuida la vida

At Nosso Galeón, we believe that the way a piece of jewelry is crafted is as important as its final design. Behind the brilliance of each piece lies a story, a territory, and often a river. That's why, from our very beginning, we understood that talking about handcrafted jewelry also means talking about the environment, health, water, and the future.

Between tradition and territory: the art of gold panning

We learned about this mining technique in northeastern Antioquia, especially in towns like San Roque and Santo Domingo, where an ancient extraction technique known as barequeo ( gold panning) is still alive. It's an artisanal method in which miners, using only river water and a wooden pan, separate the gold from the sediment without the use of chemicals. This practice, passed down through generations, respects the natural flow of water and doesn't pollute the environment or endanger the health of those involved.

Barequeo (gold panning) is present throughout communities in Colombia, and although it doesn't extract gold in large quantities, it provides something much more valuable: sustainability, cultural identity, and balance with the environment. In communities that have lived off mining for centuries, this practice represents a clean, quiet, and dignified way of life that leaves no scars on the land or on people's bodies.

The case of the Atrato River: when a river cried out for help

In Colombia, one of the greatest milestones in the relationship between extraction and the environment was the Constitutional Court's ruling T-622 of 2016. In this historic decision, the Atrato River in Chocó was declared a subject of rights due to the serious environmental pollution and destruction caused primarily by mercury extraction activities. The Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities living along its basin reported severe impacts on their health, food security, and way of life.

Thanks to this ruling, the Atrato River now has the right to be protected, conserved, and restored. Riverside communities, with the support of the State, became its guardians. This recognition sets a fundamental precedent in Latin America: understanding that ecosystems also have rights and that their care must be a shared priority.

At Nosso Galeón, we seek to be allies of communities and those who want to maintain a balance between nature, which provides us with resources, and sustainable development.

Some environmental effects that we must take into account

It's important to recognize that some large-scale extraction methods—such as surface mining—can have significant side effects if not managed properly. These include:

  • Contamination of rivers and soils with mercury , a toxic substance that can affect the nervous, renal and immune systems of animals and people.

  • Loss of biodiversity , due to the modification of sensitive ecosystems.

  • Excessive sedimentation , which alters the natural balance of rivers and affects the reproduction of aquatic species.

In the department of Antioquia , studies have shown that several water sources have mercury concentrations far above safe levels, affecting not only wildlife but also rural and indigenous communities that depend on the water and food produced there.

Towards conscious extraction

At Nosso Galeón , we work with suppliers committed to clean and safe practices. Our goal is to support them in training processes in occupational health, responsible use of materials, environmental stewardship, and formalization. We promote gold panning not as a way of "returning to the past," but as an intelligent, humane, and sustainable way of looking to the future.

But we also want to speak to the consumer. Because those who choose our jewelry aren't just buying design; they're supporting communities that work with respect, they're caring for a river, a mountain, a legacy.

A jewel that leaves no trace... but history

We believe that the true value of a jewel lies not only in its shine, but in what it doesn't pollute , what it protects , and what honors life . That's why each piece that forms part of Nosso Galeón carries with it a promise: to be part of a development model that cares for people, the land, and the planet.

In a world that needs balance, we are committed to jewelry that leaves a mark... but only in the stories of those who create it with love and conscience.
